        Vehicle Engineering of Southwest Jiaotong University is an important specialty of Bachelor degree, which is a crossing subject between the first class of Mechanical Engineering and the second class of Vehicle Application Engineering. The vehicle engineering specialty has long history in Southwest Jiaotong University and it can go back to 1919. At that time, Tangshan Technical college of State Jiaotong University, the previous Southwest Jiaotong University, abbreviated as “Tangshan Jiaotong University”, established the department of mechanical engineering and set up two special groups of mechanism building and rolling stock in order to meet the demands of mechanical qualified professionals in mining-metallurgy machinery and mining transportation equipment (rolling stock), and during the first term, sixty-six students were recruited. Subsequently, the vehicle engineering specialty gained well development, especially in the last twenty years.
        In 1986, vehicle engineering specialty became one of the specialties in the first batch to award doctorates in China.
        In 1991, the vehicle engineering specialty was confirmed as the experiment specialty of reform in education of the undergraduate course by Ministry of Railways.
        In 1992, the vehicle engineering specialty was confirmed as the national-level key specialties by Ministry of Education.
        In 1995, the rolling stock specialty is confirmed as the experiment specialty of reform in education of the undergraduate course by Ministry of Railways and takes the lead of making the plan of training according to the big class mode in the universities of national railway.
        In 1996, it was confirmed as the experiment forms of educational reform of “research and practice of the professional personnel training scheme of machinery and systematical reform of teaching courses” of the State and Ministry of Railways, faced 21st century.
        In 2002, it was confirmed as the mechanical bachelor degree personnel training foundation of Sichuan Province. Meanwhile it was confirmed as the demonstration centre of basic experiment teaching of the machinery of Sichuan Province.
        With the development of more than 80 years, the vehicle engineering specialty has an integrated training system from undergraduate, graduate student to the adult education. The specialty involves the vehicle field of the track mainly include professional directions of locomotive, rail transit vehicle, urban transit vehicle, etc. The vehicle engineering and urban transit vehicles are the two second disciplines which can award doctorates, masters and even have mobile stations for the post-doctors. Now there are 505 undergraduates and more than 90 graduate students in the University.
        This specialty trains senior engineers and technicians with initiative spirit and practice ability which possesses design theory, making knowledge, using ability of the vehicle engineering and can be engaged in such respects as design making, scientific research and development, operation and management of vehicle of the railway, highway and urban rail transit, etc.

Professional History

         Established in the early years of the Republic of China
        The vehicle engineering specialty has long history in Southwest Jiaotong University and it can go back to 1919. At that time, Tangshan Technical college of State Jiaotong University, the previous Southwest Jiaotong University, abbreviated as “Tangshan Jiaotong University”, established the department of mechanical engineering and set up two special groups of mechanism building and rolling stock in order to meet the demands of mechanical qualified professionals in mining-metallurgy machinery and mining transportation equipment (rolling stock) after establishing the civil engineering and mining and metallurgy specialty for 24 years. During the first term, Sixty-six students were recruited of first. After two years, 1921, the department of mechanical engineering of the Tangshan technical college was adjusted to the Nan Yang technical college of State Jiaotong University (the previous Shanghai Jiaotong University).
        With the establishment of new China, the cradle of the senior technicians of Chinese rolling stock arises at the historic moment.
        After liberation of the old China, according to the state plan, Tangshan Jiaotong University belongs to Ministry of Railways of military committee of China's revolution, and then renamed as the Tangshan railway institute. With the efforts of representatives' of our famous rolling stock professors such as Sun zhusheng, Mao jiaxun, a batch of patriotic returned students abroad in 1940s, the rolling stock specialty was established firstly at home on the basis of keeping the original steam locomotive specialty, and enrolled new students formally in 1949, recruited two-year educational system trainings and railway and four-year educational system undergraduates of steam locomotive specialty and rolling stock specialty.
        In 1952, steam locomotive and rolling stock were combined into a single unit, and renamed as the railway and transport mechanical specialty, and even cancel recruiting two-year educational system training students. From 1956 to 1965, steam locomotive and railway vehicle specialty were separated again, and meanwhile altered the educational system to five-year. In order to meet the demands of teachers for specialty development, in February 1955, the first batch of Russian experts ?????????????? of Moscow railway institute and professor ?????of ????railway institute came to the school to teach and begin to foster the professional graduate students of rolling stock. They trained first batch of domestic specialized graduate student. Later some teachers graduated from this specialty and leave for teaching here such as Shen Zhiyun, Yan juanmao, etc., were sent to the railway institute of the former Soviet Union to study and then got back to the department to teach again. Eighteen undergraduates of rolling stock, 10 graduate students altogether were trained during this time, adding up to one thousand nearly, including a group of foreign students who were trained for Republic of Vietnam.
In 1972, the school moved to Emei in Sichuan province, and renamed as Southwest Jiaotong University, and began to recruit three-year educational system students in the same time. Meanwhile, with the quick development of railway in our country and traction power reform in the world, diesel locomotive and electric locomotive progressively begin to replace the steam locomotive, and the diesel locomotive specialty and electric locomotive specialty were established in the university, and the steam locomotive specialty was cancelled at the same time. In order to adapt to the fast development of diesel locomotive in the railway of our country at that time, the university has set up the locomotive diesel engine specialty in 1974, and began to enroll students in the same time.

After the reform and opening-up, this specialty associated with ministry of railways and Puzhen rolling stock works and developed double deck passenger cars at the leadership of professor Sun Zhusheng and professor Mao Jiaxun, and awarded the first Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress in 1993; this specialty associated with ministry of railways and Qishuyan rolling stock works and developed first DF11's mould in our country diesel locomotive at a high speed at the leadership of professor Sun Xiang, and awarded the first Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress in 1993, and he awarded nationwide May lst labor prize medal. Professor Shen Zhiyun who graduated from this specialty and is the expert of railroad rolling stock is only Chinese Academy of Science and Engineering member in the railroad industry, and presided the design of locomotives and rolling stock on the roller testing rig, and awarded the first Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress in 1999. There are five “ Chang Jiang River specially engages the professor” in the university and four of them came from this specialty, in which professor Zhai Wanming awarded the first Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress in 2005 for “rail bound —vehicle coupling theoretic”. Superintendents of Rolling Stock Research Institute of China Railway Academy of Sciences, Sifang rolling stock & railway and Dalian Locomotive Research Institute came from this specialty, a large number of technology backbones also are graduates of specialty. From 1997, if there is not support and the participation of this specialty researchers and graduates, it almost is too far behind to catch up with 5 times improving speed greatly in China. The leader of China Railway Ministry sighs with emotion more than once “If there are not the graduates from rolling stock specialty of Southwest Jiaotong University, it very hard resembles the today of China railway!”

        1. A lead in strong academic
        The locomotives and vehicles engineering and transporting application of engineering disciplines are state key disciplines. The class 1 discipline, Traffic Engineering which contains transporting application of engineering is ranked number one in the continuous four years (assessed by ministry of education). The class 1 discipline, Mechanical Engineering which contains locomotives and vehicles engineering is ranked the number 13, which is the top-ranking in the congener profession in China. Since 1950, Professor Sun Zhusheng—director of the locomotives Steering Committee and Professor Mao Jiaxun—director of the vehicles Steering Committee, all of the commission members have come from our major. In addition, Professor Sun Zhusheng is the first batch of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council. Lead by the strong discipline, level of Undergraduate teaching is in leading position in the congener major in China. The major has reached many kinds of number 1 since founded 80 years ago: such as the first batch of the doctorial programs?the first Chinese Academy of Sciences and Academy of Engineering in this major?the first “Changjiang Scholar " Chair Professor. In China, the university has got the first State Key Laboratory, only one of the all universities which have the key disciplines locomotives and vehicles engineering.
        2. The great teaching and research
        In the recent five years, we have completed nearly 20 projects of state and province-level research, teaching and teaching reform. We have been awarded 16 teaching achievements, including 2 state teaching achievements. In terms of research, we have presided and completed more than 100 national and provincial-and ministerial-level research projects. Besides, we have presided over more than 300 other correlation issues. We have won the National Scientific and Technological Progress Award and other prizes at provincial and ministerial levels for many times. Especially, The Railway Vehicle Roller Test Rig and Railway Vehicle-track Coupling Dynamics Research and Engineering Applications, which we have presided, twice received first prize for scientific and technological progress, the top 10 of Annual Scientific and Technological advances of Chinese universities. We have published more than 500 Papers, five monographs. In national professional training materials, nearly 80% of them come from our university. Especially the«vehicles engineering», compiled by Professor Yan Juanmao, won the first prizes of national award for outstanding teaching material in 1999.

        This major was established 80 years ago, we accumulated a rich set of teaching experience in a unique in China today. The chairman of the National locomotives and vehicles Steering Committee who is the highest authority in the field of teaching comes from our major. Graduation design in the professional peer appraisal is always on the top. So far, we have brought up more than 3,000 undergraduate students and more than 400 graduate students. They made great contribution to China railway development. At present, the leader of the major, Professor Li Fu, graduated from the famous Aachen Industry of Technology University in Germany in the early 1990s, has more than 10 years experiences of study, work and teaching, which will provide favorable conditions for the further development of the major.
        4. The powerful sustentation of foundation and the comprehensive experiment conditions
        Excellent national engineering teaching base of basal machinery courses, and of Mechanics courses, provincial teaching demonstration centre of machinery basic experiment and training base for college engineering graduates, state-class curriculum "machinery design", province-level curriculum "machinery principle", "machine drawing" and so on support our foundation education. Otherwise, the modern industry training centre and state-level traction driving force laboratory and some province-level and headquarter-level laboratories in campus are also excellent for training and teaching. Both two teaching fruits ("to Integrate high grade resource , put refining stratagem, build high-level national teaching base of engineering courses” and “to build graduate study and engineering practice system and cultivate graduate ability of practice and innovation”) got successful with national blue ribbon and some provincial awards, which are also strong evidence for our education.
        The national unique laboratory specially engaging in study of wheel track relation and locomotive rolling and vibration, the national unique initiative hanging laboratory of locomotive, the unique large-scale 150 vehicle train braking fixation experiment in Chinese campus and a series of experiment equipment constitute our main body of teaching experiment.         The faculty of over 40 (9 doctor tutor, 4 Changjiang Scholars, 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, 8 young experts with outstanding contribution, 5 leaders of learning and technology in Sichuan Province, 2 with foreign Ph.
